PRotect yourself from toxins

Most of us are already well aware of the toxic burden of alcohol and tobacco during pregnancy . But what about the less obvious toxins that we are exposed to everyday inadvertently? Most of these reach us through water, food, and air. Considering how essential these three are to our survival, we may want to examine best practices when it comes to quality.

Water- First consider having your water tested. Tap water is contaminated with hydrocarbons, pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs just to name a few. Consider a water filter if you do not currently have one or upgrading the one you do have. There are many types of water filters with their pros and cons…..some that do not extract all toxins (carbon and charcoal), and others that extract everything, including beneficial minerals requiring remineralization (reverse osmosis). Do your research and/or have your water tested. https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water

Food- Quality matters. Organic, pasture-raised foods not only contain higher amounts of nutrients in comparison to conventionally grown/farmed foods, but they are also not contaminated with pesticides, hormones and other chemicals that disrupt hormones, cause digestive distress, and a host of other health concerns. Additionally, eat real, whole foods. Most of what we eat today could hardly be considered food and is laden with additives and dyes considered to contribute to adverse behavior in children.

Air- The air we breathe may be the most difficult to control. However, according to the EPA often our homes are more toxic than the air outdoors and this is a real problem when most of us now spend approximately 90% of our day indoors. Try to get outside more, change your home air filters more frequently, open windows when you can for better ventilation, grow plants indoors, and consider testing for radon.
